What it actually means

When a cat "loafs," it's resting in a posture that takes longer to spring out of than a normal crouch. It's a strong relaxation signal — the cat doesn't expect to need its paws for escape.

What to do

Loafing IN your presence is high trust. A loafing cat is the indoor cat equivalent of "all is well."

📚 Source: Bradshaw, Cat Sense (2013) — discusses posture as a primary indicator of perceived safety in domestic cats.
